Portland was the site of the Western World's Fair in the summer of 1905. It was officially known as the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition. In 1804, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark set out on an Expedition from St. Louis to map the Oregon Territory. They arrived in Oregon in 1805.

The 40 Mile Loop Land Trust is an Advocacy Group Promoting a System of
Connected Recreational Trails in the Portland Metro Area.
The Trust also Pursues Completion of the 40 Mile Trail
Around the Portland Metropolitan Area.

City and County Agencies

Outdoor Clubs

  • Audubon Society of Portland  Very active organization with numerous trips and activities.

  • Mazamas  Oregon's famous climbing club. The Mazamas offer a variety of  outdoor activities.

  • Oregon Nordic Club  Primary a singles-social cub that has monthly potlucks and all types of outdoor activities with the emphasis on cross-country skiing.  Most of the trips are on the week-end - they also have week-long outdoor trips.

Clubs for Hiking and Walking

  • Columbia River Volkssport/Walking Club  CRVC is a non-profit organization based in Portland, Oregon.  CRVC organizes quality non-competitive walking events in scenic and historic areas.

  • Portland Barefoot Hikers  Informal group that organizes barefoot hikes in the Portland area. Site includes group overview and contact information.

  • Team Oregon  Devoted to runners and walkers of all ages, with coaching, publications, rehabilitation, and forum pages. 

  • Trails Club of Oregon  They have hikes and other outdoor activities, open to the public, scheduled nearly every weekend year round.

  • Walking Clubs in Oregon  This is an excellent resource if you love to walk or want to start walking.

  • Willamette Pedestrian Coalition  WPC is a non-profit community-based membership organization in the greater Portland area dedicated to promoting walking and making the conditions for walking safe and attractive.

Oregon

  • Cascades Mountain Range  Gorp has built an excellent resource forMount Hood - a long one hour drive from Portland and where you can engage in numerous outdoor activities. the Oregon Cascades mountains.

  • Columbia Gorge  Go Northwest's resource for the Gorge.  The Gorge is a 50-million-year-old geologic wonder.  It is a natural wind tunnel, creating great windsurfing conditions.   Hiking and whitewater rafting are also popular activities.

  • Great Outdoors Recreation Pages (GORP) covers Oregon from tip to tip.  It has built hundred of links and it has it own content.

  • Oregon Outdoor Recreation Guide is a resource for flyfishing, fishing, camping, skiing, snowboarding, hiking, and other outdoor activities in Oregon. It has some hidden gems about Oregon.

  • American Hiking Society  Learn about the health benefits of hiking and tips for taking kids on the trail. There's also a checklist to ensure a safe trip, hints on battling bugs on the trail and much more.

  • Recreation Government  The federal government has dedicated this Web site to recreation information. Links include: auto touring, biking, boating, historic/cultural sites, hiking, recreational vehicles and much more. Click on any state to get a list of recreation areas.  Access recreation maps that link to "dynamic maps" of your destination. Search by destination's name, location in a particular city or state. Also search by the type of activity.

  • US Orienteering Federation  If you love exploring the outdoors and are interested in geography and maps; here's a sport to try. First you learn how to navigate with a map and compass. Then you're ready for the workout part. "Run, walk, ski, or mountain bike to a series of points shown on the map." Find a schedule of activities near you by clicking "local club" at the bottom of the main page.
