Walk and hike - it's good for your health!

The Eastbank Esplanade provides walkers and hikers with a unique and distinctively urban experience. Tucked between Interstate 5 and the Willamette River, the Esplanade is 1.5 miles long, extending from the Hawthorne Bridge to the Steel Bridge with connections to eastside neighborhoods as well as across the river. Primarily a pedestrian/bicycle corridor, it offers unparalleled views of downtown Portland and leaves visitors with a whole new perspective of the river and the eastside. Hundreds of office workers in downtown Portland use it daily.

The 40 Mile Loop Land Trust is an Advocacy Group Promoting a System of
Connected Recreational Trails in the Portland Metro Area.
The Trust also Pursues Completion of the 40 Mile Trail
Around the Portland Metropolitan Area.

Reynolds Trail

A 1.8 mile long trail was constructed atop the levee at the new Troutdale Reynolds Industrial Park in Troutdale and opened in late October 2008. The trail fills a gap in the 40-Mile Loop plan, the trail borders wetlands and open space to one side and new industrial development like that of a future FedEx Ground distribution hub on the other.

The former Reynolds Aluminum plant property in Troutdale is in the process of being redeveloped, enhanced, and preserved as the new Troutdale Reynolds Industrial Park. As a part of this redevelopment effort, the 1.8-mile segment of trail was completed with support from Oregon State Parks in the form of a $100,000 grant. The scenic trail provides unique views of the Sandy River and will complete part of the “Reynolds Gap” currently identified in the 40-Mile Loop trail plans.

As a brownfield and superfund site, the 700-acre Reynolds property has been cleaned to industrial standards. It was annexed to the City of Troutdale, a new enterprise zone was created, the trail was constructed and development for streets and utilities is currently underway. In mid October 2008, the Port announced the sale of the first lot to FedEx Ground for a state-of-the-art distribution center.
